On March 15 & 16 the Australian Dental Council celebrated three decades of leading dental assessment and accreditation at the 2024 Assessor, Examiner and Item Writer Conference. This was coupled with a memorable anniversary dinner.

At the conference, Dr. Helen Gneil of TEQSA provided thought-provoking insights into the implications of generative artificial intelligence for academic integrity and assessment integrity. In a workshop focused on creating evidence-based simulation activities, Denise Higgins examined simulation in dental education in depth. CEO of ABSTARR Consulting Professor Gregory Phillips, a Waanyi and Jaru First Nations man, spoke about the ADC’s commitment to providing tailored training for assessors to review education programs against Standard 6 – Cultural Safety. In addition to recent site visits to the United Arab Emirates, attendees were excited by updates on International Accreditation. ADC’s assessors, Professor Menaka Abuzar, Associate Professor Ramesh Balasubramaniam and Associate Professor David Thomson, discussed their experiences assessing dental programs at Gulf Medical University and University of Sharjah.

Examiners and item writers attended workshops to discuss the standardisation and calibration of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). Led by convenors, these sessions provided an opportunity for participants to offer insights and engage in a valuable conversation centred around the rubrics used in practical examinations. The exchange ensured consistent and fair assessment of candidates’ performance across OSCE stations. Participants aimed to align their evaluation approaches, enhancing examination reliability and validity.

As part of the final session, Professor Julian Archer addressed decision-making biases.

Friday night came alive with the vibrant energy of our valued guests and dental industry leaders. The evening commenced with a heartfelt Welcome to Country by proud Wurundjeri Woman, Stacie Piper, followed by a stirring address from Chair of the Board, Dr. Chris Bourke. Past President, Professor Mike Morgan, enthralled attendees with his rich insights into ADC’s history through a captivating video. The festivities continued with fond farewells to CEO Narelle Mills, including from the Chair of the Dental Board of Australia Dr Murray Thomas, and an engaging trivia series hosted by our enthusiastic ADC staff!

As we pause to reminisce on our journey, we extend our deepest gratitude to all who have shared their dedication with the ADC throughout the years. Here’s to thirty years of excellence and innovation and many more ahead.
